Olson (1973) concluiu que o gênero Porphyrula não possui características distintivas suficientes para justificar sua independência de Porphyrio. Ademais, as combinações Porphyrio martinica (Linnaeus, 1766) e P. flavirostris (Gmelin, 1789) têm se tornado preponderantes em obras referenciais recentes (Sibley & Monroe 1990, Taylor 1996, Taylor & van Perlo 1998, Banks et al. 2002, SACC 2003).
